American Progressivism, Further Reading and Impressions…

As mentioned in a previous post, I’m reading American Progressivism in an effort to understand what Hillary Clinton proclaimed that she, and so many others are: “early twentieth century progressive.”

My hope was, and continues to be, that I will be able to use their own words to “hang” them, as it were, and reveal them to be the anti-constitutionalists they are, but I’m finding that this will be no small task… They’re a clever bunch.  They’re extremely “circumspect” (I’m being generous here) about their intentions and the displaying of their propaganda.  “Soundbites” are few and far between.  Quick one liners, good red meat to sink your teeth into and say, “Ah!  There it is!” are few.  And even when you find them, I can hear the shrieking, “You took it out of context!”

Back in the ’10’s and ’20’s, Americans had a much longer attention span and their speeches and writings show it.  It takes them ten paragraphs to say what a modern ideologue would take a sentence or two to impart.  And further, it really requires a full and fair reading of those ten paragraphs to capture the full weight and import of the really evil things they are asserting in the guise of compassion for the downtrodden.

These are smart, evil people.  I don’t know how anyone who purports to love our founding principles can self-identify as a “progressive.”

I fear this won’t end well.

20th Century Progressives' View of America

I mentioned in a previous post that I’m reading American Progressivism in an effort to understand what Hillary Clinton proclaimed that she, and so many others are: “early twentieth century progressive.”

After the introduction by the authors, and campaign speeches by T. Roosevelt & Woodrow Wilson, which brought me about 50+ pages in, my initial impressions are this:

Capitalism and capitalists are bad.
Class warfare as a campaign tactic is nothing new.
Understanding the power of the media and how politicians can subsume and subvert it for propaganda is also nothing new.

I don’t think I have ever read a book that had me scratching so many notes in the margins.  I’ll post some excerpts later, but for now, there’s ain’t a lot of “morning in America” in the vision of these characters.  Oh, they talk around it and give it some lip service, but the philosophies underpinning their policies are dark, and anti-individual rights.

American Progressivism by Pestritto & Atto

I’m reading American Progressivism in an effort to understand what Hillary Clinton proclaimed that she, and so many others are: “early twentieth century progressive.”  They can’t mean it, really, because if they read what I have read so far, their beliefs are wholly incompatible with the Constitution.  The authors have done what all people with the facts on their side and courage of their convictions do: let ’em talk and hang themselves.  I’ll post more details later.
