Tired of Feeling Like an Idiot re: Israeli “Settlements”? Here’s Your Fix.

I’m 51 years old. I’ve had a reasonably good education. I’m no genius, but I’m smarter than the average bear.

And I will freely admit I haven’t had a firm grasp on the fuss about Israel and her borders. Like many, I have had a vague understanding of it, mostly boiling down to “They’re surrounded by people who want to kill them. They’re the only western democracy in a sea of anti-western sh*tholes. I’m with them.”

Here’s your fix. It’s part of a larger article editorial at NRO I heartily recommend, Obama’s Shameful Parting Shot at Israel, but here’s your pull quote:

In short, the lines informally agreed upon when Israel became a country were never made formal and they’ve been fighting about it ever since. What’s not said here is what I heard Charles Krauthammer say on Fox last night. It really captures the insidious evil of what Obama just engineered at the United Nations Security Council on Friday, December 23rd:

To give you an idea of how appalling this resolution is, it declares that any Jew who lives in the Jewish quarter of Jerusalem, the Jewish quarter, inhabited for 1,000 years, is illegal, breaking international law, essentially an outlaw, can be hauled into the international criminal court and international courts in Europe, which is one of the consequences. The Jewish quarter has been populated by Jews for 1,000 years. In the war of Independence in 1948, the Arabs invaded Israel to wipe it out. They did not succeed, but the Arab Legion succeeded in conquering the Jewish quarter. They expelled all the Jews. They destroyed all the synagogues and all the homes. For 19 years, no Jew could go there. The Israelis got it back in the Six-Day War. Now it’s declared that this is not Jewish territory. Remember, it’s called “the Jewish quarter,” but it belongs to other people. And any Jew who lives there is an outlaw. That’s exactly what we supported. The resolution is explicit in saying settlements in the occupied territories and in east Jerusalem.

It’s worth reading the entire text of Krauthammer’s Take: Abstention on Anti-Israel Vote a Disgrace: ‘U.S. Joined the Jackals at the U.N.’  here.

There. Now if you encounter someone over the holidays who says, “Isn’t that awful what Obama did at the U.N. the other day?” you’ll be able to do something other than, “Oh! I see your drink needs refilling. Can I get you another?”

⇒ Exit Question: If Obama were a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, what would he have done differently?

I’ve long said if he isn’t technically Muslim (I actually believe Obama’s only true God is himself) he’s at least functionally Muslim. Let’s remember: he was raised until 10 in Indonesia, where he attended a Muslim school – those are critically formative years.  Then from 10 to 18 was mentored by the (literal!) card-carrying Communist Frank Marshall Davis at the behest of his white grandfather in Hawaii, who felt he needed a black male “role model.” This guy didn’t live in the lower-48 until he went to college at 18, having spent half his life in Muslim Indonesia and the other half in a state-still-with-that-new-car-smell tropical paradise in the middle of the Pacific. He did not marinade in mom, the flag, and apple pie. White picket fences and 4th of July parades did not become “normal” for him until he was 18. Think about it…

Trump Kids One Bomb Away From Being Pauper Millionaires

Trump International Golf Club Dubai

Why am I the only one talking about this? I haven’t seen a single pundit mention this:

Every property with “Trump” on it is now a target. Just one bomb blows up up one Trump property and Trump’s uninsurable. If Trump’s uninsurable, the value of his properties collapses. How? Trump will have to sell. Which makes him prey. What once was a $100M building becomes a $25M building because he has to sell it – fast. In fact, he has to sell all of them fast. And everyone will know it: Trump will know he can’t afford to have a second hotel full of employees/guests blown up, and the buyer will know Trump can’t afford to have another hotel of employees/guest blown up. It becomes an instant fire sale. And a literal one.

Trump’s kids will be mere pauper millionaires.

Think about it: You’re a terrorist. You and your merry band of jihadis know the Leader of the Free World owns the hotel within driving distance of the sh*thole you live in. You surround the place and make a call: “Release the Blind Sheik (or whatever) or we blow up 1,000 people and turn your gold-plated marble tower into rubble.”

Even the threat of it is enough. Even if our guys save the day and the bomb doesn’t go off that would do it. Fire sale ON.

Quite apart from the financial calamity for the Trump children, suddenly pauper millionaires, there’s the human calamity. How many thousands of people are kidnapping targets now? How many front desk clerks, maids, golf pros, hotel managers? Every single one of these people is now a target because their “boss” is the President.

I’m frankly stunned Trump’s insurers haven’t given him a little ring-a-dingy and said “Hey, uh, Mr. President-elect… About your policy… We’re thinking we may have to raise your premiums… A LOT.”

Maybe this phone call did happen and that’s why Trump’s press conference regarding the future of his company which was scheduled today was postponed indefinitely.

There’s every reason in the world for him to 100% divest, not the least of which is the ethical one, but really, the fiscal one is what would – and should – send a thrill up his leg: it’s 100% tax free! That’s right! There’s a law that says if you have to divest because you’re an elected official you don’t have to pay any taxes on the sale. Let’s say he would normally pay 39% on the sale. Does he expect the value of his holdings to increase more than 40% over the next 4-8 years? Hard to see how if he’s not going to make “any new deals” (which is what he tweet-promised yesterday).

SELL Mr. Trump. SELL. NOW. You’ll get a +40% return. And very likely save some lives. Sometimes doing the right thing can be profitable. This one of those times. Don’t throw it away with both hands.

Democrat Spook to Obama: WAKE UP

christian-muslim-symbolsChristians underwent their Reformation. It’s time Muslims do too. It’s time. Way past time. That’s what this Democrat intelligence official is saying here, in essence. It’s so obvious to me I’m sort of stunned more people don’t talk about it in those terms. Perhaps they’re afraid framing it in that way would lend oxygen to the Left’s whole “Crusade” accusation of the “radical Right.” Whatever. I’m tired of worrying about what the Left will say. [Bleep] ’em. Say what you mean and mean what you say. Say it plainly. We’re not a stupid people (mostly;). Our deep sense of fairness will more than make up for whatever stupid bubbles up. We’re good at fair, we Americans. We have a remarkably good sense of it. So let’s trust the people, hm?

You can read my excerpts below or the whole thing here.

I’m a Former CIA Officer and a Democrat. Here’s What Obama Still Doesn’t Get About Terrorism

…Islam is a faith in crisis.
President-elect Donald Trump’s chosen national security advisor, Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, has tried explaining this — albeit in impolite terms — by saying that “Islam is a political ideology based on a religion.”
Flynn’s poorly worded warning stems from experience, and he knows what happens when religious leaders take over governments. Women face widespread discrimination. Gay people are imprisoned or killed. Dancing, music and other forms of art are banned. And those who criticize Islam or convert to Christianity face prison or death.
However, what causes the most alarm to national security experts is the Wahhabi objective of global conquest. Islamic State and Al Qaeda are terrorist groups built on Wahhabi ideology. They want to govern the world under sharia law, and they are more than willing to achieve their goals through force. Islamic State is known for beheading its victims or burning them alive. And as we saw in Columbus, they’re inspiring legions of supporters. …

The United States has also suffered the consequences of Islamist extremism and those inspired by the radical ideology. We remember San BernardinoBostonFt. HoodLittle RockGarlandChattanoogaFt. DixOrlando. Shanksville. New York. Washington.

Muslims have every right to sit at the American table if they support the Constitution. We should all proudly acknowledge brave women and men like my former CIA colleague who led our nation’s war on terrorism for more than 15 years; he’s Shiite Muslim. This officer — whom I can’t name because he’s still officially under cover— was ruthless in his hunt for radical killers, and he deserves a medal for his years of sacrifice.

Are we at war with the whole of Islam, or should we be? Of course not. But Islam is a faith in crisis, and to deny that certain strains of the religion are contributing to global instability is to deny reality.

After eight years as president, Obama still doesn’t understand that.

What Not “Oppressing” Hath Wrought

Obama’s “leading from behind,” i.e., not “oppressing” other countries with our nasty-ass, white, colonial imperialism has had profound consequences – but not in a good way. The misery told in this chart is unimaginable.

Total 34.46M “persons of concern” were “displaced” at the end of 2008 (You can click the little tabs in the graphic). Refugees, basically. People who had to leave home, against their will, because staying meant death, either fast or slow.

By the end of 2015*? (Nearly) DOUBLED. 63.91M.

Perspective? 34.46M is roughly the total population of America’s top 20 biggest cities. (Via the U.S. Census, accurate as of 2015.)

CHANT IT WITH ME: “This is what colonialism looks like!”

Thank GOD they’re not “oppressed” anymore.

Heckuva job, Barry.

Leaving the Nest. Letting Go.

3-cherubs-reading-a-bookMy youngest just got early acceptance to her top choice college for next fall. And an academic merit scholarship chopping 40% off the tuition! (Yeah, I’m bragging. Deal with it.) If she goes, she’ll be over 1000 miles away. I expect she will. There’s a chance she may go to a school 100 miles away, but I doubt it. So, when Coryne goes, she’ll be about 1100 miles away, about 5 hours south of my oldest, Leigh, who is 900 miles away!

How did I get here? How did this happen? How did I get to be 51, married to a guy who will be 60 (!) next spring, with a 20, 18, and 18 year old? I won’t say “it seems like only yesterday they were in diapers,” because, frankly, it doesn’t. Seems like a long time ago. But it does seem… sudden. I know those two things don’t go together but nothing about parenthood is what you expect or makes perfect sense so perhaps that’s appropriate.

Each of my 3 girls is absolutely unique. I remember looooooong before I ever met their father, that I thought of my children up on a cloud, sort of peering over, like the cherubs in the Sistine Chapel, chubby fingers lightly curled over the edge, waiting to alight into my arms. I never felt like they were entirely a surprise to me, rather that I had merely waited to “meet” them. That from a power far beyond our understanding, on a clock far beyond our imagining, they’d know the right time. It’s not a feeling of helplessness to fate, merely that we’re in it – this fate thing – and to just keep calm and trust it. That’s not to say we’re not captains of our own ships. I believe we are. But we can either sail into smooth waters or crash into the rocks. That we are ships at sea is the fate part. The captain part is mine.

That’s all for now. Just feeling a bit wistful.
