Jeff Lorber’s “State of Grace”

This title-track instrumental by Jeff Lorber still gives me goose-bumps after all these years, “State of Grace.” When Mike and I were newlyweds and living in Philly, we used to drive our little Mazda Miata convertible out to Avalon (the Jersey Shore). We’d take the scenic route through the sandy wooded roads of south Jersey, and I remember getting so excited the sandier it got, because that meant we were closer to the ocean… I remember there was an old-fashioned ice-cream shack in the middle of nowhere we’d sometime stop at on the way home, and when corn was in season, there was nothing sweeter than south Jersey corn. We’d grab a dozen and just eat them for dinner! Anyway… I love this. I’ve always loved it. Listen to how the baselines “talk” to the toplines. How they preview and echo one another. It’s beautiful. I’ve been listening to it for 20 years and I’m still hearing new things in its structure. It’s a little work of art, truly.
